Your First Brazilian Wax: What I Tell Every New Client

Written by Noemi, Licensed Esthetician & Owner · Full Circle Beauty, Point Loma, San Diego · Updated March 2026

I've done hundreds of Brazilian waxes at my Point Loma studio, and the conversation before almost every first appointment is the same: "I'm so nervous — is it going to hurt? Am I supposed to do anything beforehand? What even happens in there?"

I get it. The whole thing sounds intimidating. But here's what I've learned after two years of doing this full-time — most of the fear comes from not knowing what to expect. So let me walk you through exactly what I tell every new client before they come in.

Before You Come In

The most important prep step is also the one most people miss: stop shaving for at least 2–3 weeks beforehand. Your hair needs to be about a quarter-inch long — roughly the size of a grain of rice — for the wax to grip properly. If it's too short, the wax slides right off and we can't get a clean result.

A few other things that help:

  • Exfoliate gently 24–48 hours before (not the day of) — this clears dead skin around the follicles and helps the wax grip
  • Skip caffeine the day of your appointment — it makes your skin more reactive and sensitive
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing — your skin will thank you for it afterward
  • If you have a low pain threshold, an OTC pain reliever 30–45 minutes before can take the edge off

Come in as clean as possible. Skip the heavy lotions or oils on the area that morning.

During Your Wax

At Full Circle Beauty, I use premium hard wax for all Brazilian waxes. This is important. Hard wax adheres to the hair, not the skin — which makes it significantly gentler than strip wax, especially in sensitive areas. It's what I learned at Aveda in Portland and what I believe every client deserves.

Here's what the appointment looks like: I'll cleanse the area first, then apply the hard wax in small sections. As it cools and sets, I remove it quickly. The whole Brazilian typically takes about 30 minutes. Yes, there's discomfort — I won't lie to you about that. But it's fast, and every single client I've worked with has told me it was much more manageable than they expected.

The first appointment is always the most intense. Your hair follicles haven't been waxed before, so they resist a bit more. By your second and third appointments, it gets dramatically easier — the hair grows back finer and the follicles become less reactive. I always tell new clients: commit to three appointments and you'll wonder why you waited so long.

After Your Wax

Your skin is going to be sensitive for 24–48 hours. Here's what to avoid:

  • Hot baths, steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs
  • Tight clothing or anything that creates friction on the waxed area
  • Sun exposure and tanning beds
  • Fragranced lotions or products on the waxed skin
  • Intense exercise the same day — sweat and bacteria can irritate freshly waxed skin

Starting 48–72 hours after your wax, begin exfoliating gently 2–3 times a week. This is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent ingrown hairs — and it's the step most people skip.

One More Thing

I started Full Circle Beauty because I genuinely believe everyone deserves to feel completely comfortable and confident in their skin. My studio is private, clean, and judgment-free. There is nothing you can say or ask that will embarrass me — I've heard and seen everything, and my only job is to make you feel taken care of.

If you're on the fence about booking your first Brazilian, reach out. I'd rather answer your questions first than have you show up anxious. That's not the experience I want for you.
