How to Actually Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing (From Someone Who's Seen What Doesn't Work)
Ingrown hairs are the most common complaint I hear from waxing clients. And honestly? They're almost entirely preventable — the problem is that most people don't know the right steps, or they skip them because they seem like overkill.
After two years of waxing clients at Full Circle Beauty, I've noticed a clear pattern: the clients who never get ingrowns are the ones who exfoliate consistently. The ones who always get them are the ones who don't. It really is that simple — and that fixable.
Why Ingrown Hairs Happen
When hair grows back after waxing, it sometimes can't break through the skin's surface because dead skin cells are blocking the follicle opening. The hair curls back under the skin instead of emerging straight, and you get a bump. Tight clothing, friction, and dry skin all make it worse.
The fix is keeping the follicle opening clear so hair can emerge naturally. That's it.
The Protocol I Give Every Waxing Client
Days 1–2: Leave it alone. Your skin is sensitive after waxing. Don't exfoliate, don't use fragranced products, don't wear tight clothing over the waxed area. Let your skin settle.
Day 3 onward: Exfoliate 2–3 times a week. This is the step that makes all the difference. Use a gentle physical exfoliator (a loofah or soft body scrub) or a chemical exfoliant (a lotion with glycolic acid or salicylic acid). Chemical exfoliants are my preference — they work more evenly and don't create friction. Apply after showering to clean skin.
Daily: Moisturize. Hydrated skin allows hair to break through the surface more easily. Use a fragrance-free lotion on the waxed area every day. This sounds basic but most people only moisturize the areas they can see in a mirror.
Ongoing: Skip the tight waistbands. Tight leggings, underwear, and pants create constant friction on freshly waxed skin, especially in the bikini area. Wear loose clothing for 24–48 hours post-wax, and be mindful of it the rest of the time too.
Products That Actually Help
- Tend Skin — applies after 48 hours, reduces bumps and ingrowns effectively
- Glycolic acid body lotion — chemical exfoliation without scrubbing, great for consistent maintenance
- Pure aloe vera gel — soothing immediately after waxing, anti-inflammatory
What Not to Do
Do not pick at or squeeze ingrown hairs. I know it's tempting. But picking causes scarring, hyperpigmentation, and infection — all of which are much harder to treat than the original ingrown. If you have a persistent or painful ingrown, come in and let me handle it properly.
Also: don't shave between appointments. I know it's hard to wait, but shaving between waxes disrupts the hair growth cycle and makes your next wax less effective and more uncomfortable. Let the hair grow out and stick to the waxing schedule — your skin will thank you.
