Brazilian vs. Bikini Wax: An Honest Breakdown from Your Esthetician

Written by Noemi, Licensed Esthetician & Owner · Full Circle Beauty, Point Loma, San Diego · Updated March 2026

This is probably the question I get asked most often — usually in a slightly embarrassed whisper when someone calls to book for the first time. Don't be embarrassed. It's a completely reasonable question and I'd rather you ask than guess.

Here's the honest answer.

What a Bikini Wax Actually Removes

A bikini wax cleans up everything that would show outside a swimsuit bottom — the sides, top, and inner thighs along the bikini line. It's a tidy-up. You'll leave looking clean and polished, but we're not going further than what's visible in a bathing suit.

Think of it as the "I want to feel put together for the beach" option. It's a shorter appointment (about 15 minutes), less intense, and a great starting point if you've never been waxed before.

What a Brazilian Wax Actually Removes

A Brazilian removes everything — front, sides, and back — with the option to leave a small strip or triangle if you want. Full reset, front to back. Most clients choose full removal; some prefer a small landing strip. We talk about it before we start so you get exactly what you want.

Brazilian appointments take about 30 minutes. There's more going on, more sensitive areas involved, but the result is complete smoothness that lasts 3–4 weeks without thinking about it.

The Pain Question

I'm going to be straight with you: a Brazilian involves more sensitive areas, so there's more discomfort than a bikini wax. But here's what I've seen with hundreds of clients — the anticipation is always worse than the reality. Hard wax (which I use for all Brazilians at Full Circle Beauty) makes a significant difference. It grips only the hair, not the surrounding skin, which keeps the discomfort very manageable.

Bikini wax is quicker and less intense. Brazilian takes a bit more, but with good technique it's nothing like what most people have built up in their heads.

  • Brazilian Wax — $70

My Honest Recommendation

If you've never been waxed before and you're nervous, start with a bikini wax. Get a feel for the process, meet me, see the studio — then graduate to a Brazilian on your next visit once you know what to expect.

If you've been waxed before and you're debating, I'll tell you what I tell most clients: once you try a Brazilian, very few people go back to bikini. Not having to think about it for 3–4 weeks is just worth it.

Still not sure? Just say so when you book. We'll figure it out together before we start — there's no pressure and no wrong answer.
