What to Do Before Your First Brow Lamination (And What to Skip)
I've done enough brow laminations now to know that the results I get in the treatment room are only half the story. The other half is what you do — and don't do — in the days before your appointment.
Good prep doesn't take much effort. But skipping it can mean weaker results, uneven processing, or skin irritation. Here's exactly what I tell every new brow lamination client before they come in.
The Prep That Actually Matters
Stop tweezing, threading, and waxing your brows for at least 3–4 weeks beforehand. I know this is harder than it sounds. But the more hair I have to work with, the fuller and more dramatic your results will be. Lamination can't create hair that isn't there — it can only maximize what exists. Let it grow.
Stop retinol and exfoliating products near the brow area 5 days before. This is the one most people miss. Retinol, AHAs, BHAs — anything that thins the skin or increases sensitivity needs to stop near the brow area at least 5 days before your appointment. These products make your skin more reactive to the lamination solution, which can cause irritation or inconsistent processing.
Come in with clean, product-free brows. No brow gel, no pomade, no oils, no brow pencil. Product residue on the hairs prevents the lamination solution from penetrating evenly. The cleaner your brows are when you arrive, the better the result.
The Timing Question
Freshly laminated brows look slightly more intense for the first 24–48 hours as the hairs fully settle into their new position. By day 3, the softened, natural result appears — and that's the look that lasts 6–8 weeks.
If you have a special event coming up, book your lamination 5–7 days beforehand. Not the day before. Give the brows time to settle and show you their real result before the big day.
During the Appointment
We'll talk about the shape you want before I start. I always ask to see inspiration photos if you have them — it helps me understand exactly the direction and fullness you're going for. Some people want dramatic and fluffy; others want clean and defined. Both are achievable, and it starts with the conversation before the solution goes on.
The Aftercare That Protects Your Investment
After your appointment, the key rules for the first 24 hours: keep them dry, don't touch them, no makeup on the brows. After 48 hours, apply a nourishing brow oil nightly. I recommend castor oil or a dedicated brow serum — both condition the hairs and help the lamination last closer to 8 weeks than 6.
The clients whose results last the longest are the ones who do the nightly oil. Thirty seconds before bed. That's all it takes.
